SUSTAINABILITY

Social Responsibility and Internal Communications plan of action

In a globalized world, where resources are finite and possibilities of economic growth appear endless, decision makers in their process of thought must consider new paradigms. Being Socially Responsible means to be constantly reflecting on what direction to bear based on what is best for participants and the community in general.

Grupo Multiterminais comprehends, approves and encourages the practice of sustainable actions seeking a better world. We create and administrate environmentally friendly projects, naturally making an objective of ours to reduce negative impacts to our environment. We believe that social projects straighten relations with communities in which we act, also promoting citizenship and valuing people.

Expanding our business seeking a balance between natural resources, social aspects and economic growth is our goal. Grupo Multiterminais assumes this responsibility with the world, with our collaborators, and with present and future clients.
    • In 2020 MultiRio and MultiCar completed 13 years of selective collection
Recyclable waste over these years has represented significant reductions in the environmental impacts of our activities, such as:

      - The recycling of 230 tons of paper, which avoided the estimated cut of 5,070 trees and the consumption of 22,586m³ of water.
      - Recycling 163 tons of plastic, which avoided estimated emissions of around 220 tons of CO².
      - Recycling 1,961 tons of metals, which prevented the estimated extraction of 2,236 tons of minerals.
    • Central of Solid Residues
In 2008, MultiRio built its new Central of Solid Residues; adquiring a presa in order to optimize the segregation of recyclable residue, these stored in the Central for Solid Residues, and began storing, temporarily, waste and other non-recyclables in a compacter.

These measures sought to optimize and expand the capacity of storing residual waste, reducing its direct environmental impacts in the process of transporting them to its final destination. The past four weekly pick ups were reduced to one pick up every 20 days.
    • Treatment and Re-use of Waste Water
In February 2014, MultiRio implemented the biological water treatment system, for treatment of waste water from the washing of equipment.

This system reduced costs, water consumption and the residue production, benefiting not only the company but also the environment, by reducing the consumption of 1,500 m3 of water.
    • In Loco Composting
In 2014, MultiRio was once again, the pioneer terminal in reducing environmental impacts caused by food waste scraps. In April, MultiRio implemented in loco composting, after 4 months of testing the new technology. Besides the reduction in CO2 emissions, the fertilizer will be reused in the company’s gardens. This measure has several benefits to the environment, including:

      - Reduces use of sanitary deposits
      - Reduces the emission of CO2 and methane which are harmful to the environment
      - Produces an extremely potent organic fertilizer
      - Increases recycling output, since organic sources are separated from recyclable materials such as glass and plastic
    • Reduced consumption of plastic cups
In 2009 MultiRio installed water fountains and distributed squeeze bottles for the collaborators with the goal of reducing the consumption of plastic cups in MultiRio and MultiCar, consequently diminishing residual waste in the environment, eliminating the risk of throwing cups in the sea, optimizing the cleanse and maintenance of the patio and the port of MultiRio and MultiCar as well as providing cold water for the consumption of collaborators involved in ship operations.
    • Navis Prime Route
One of the main measures adopted by MultiRio to reduce the consumption of diesel oil in their operations was the investment in the Navis PrimeRoute system. Operations began in October 2010 with the goal of optimizing the movement of containers, realized by trucks, by identifying which one is closer to the cargo to be moved and thus reducing diesel oil consumption.
    • Separating Trash
In 2006, MultiRio began separating trash, installing specific bins for residue from offices, dining hall, patio, storage areas and shops. Since then more than 1800 trees and four Olympic pools of filtered water were preserved, taking into consideration only the recycling of paper.
    • Relocating Residue
In 2010, MultiRio began relocating residue from meals to be reused as manure.
    • Warehouse 5-Resende Unit
With 8.000 m² of useful area, Warehouse 5, which is part of the Multiterminais Resende complex, was projected and constructed according to the most modern concepts of sustainability. A water collecting system was designed to collect and store rain water, which is then re-used in the pressurized anti-fire system, in the bathrooms and for cleaning purposes. Another innovation is the use of a transparent rooftop enabling a high index of natural light to illuminate the environment reducing thus the use of electric energy and maintaining a comfortable temperature in the warehouse.
    • Portainers and Electric RTGs
MultiRio acquired new STS (ship-to-shore crane) portrainers that are equipped with the Tandem "Single-Hoist" system, allowing them to simultaneously move two 40 feet containers or four 20 feet containers, for its container terminal. Such equipment does not use fossil fuels in their operations and will aid the company to elevate the movement quantity per hour.

Beyond the portainers, Multiterminais acquired 06 RTGs (Rubber Tyred Gantry) that move and store the containers in the terminal’s patio. Focused in sustainability, these RTGs are equipped with a system developed by Siemens, which is new in South America, which avoids the use of fossil fuels in its operations. This technologic sustainable solution reduces tons of emissions of harmful gasses.
    • Colégio Estadual Jornalista Maurício Azedo
Through a public-private partnership, we enabled the construction and maintenance of the only public high school in the Caju neighborhood in 2015. In the first evaluation of the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb), in 2019, the school achieved the highest result of the entire Metropolitan Region VI and one of the best across the state network.

Since then, more than two thousand students have received public education with a differentiated, full-time curriculum, designed to fully meet professional training focused on insertion into the job market, thus triggering an increase in income and quality of life for citizens.
    • Gol de Letra Library
This initiative serves the residents of the Caju neighborhood and offers a space with multiple educational and leisure opportunities for children, teenagers, young people and adults. A collection of more than four thousand books for borrowing and reading on site, a toy library, games library, computers for research and electronic games are available to users. In addition to the collection, participants can enjoy activities mediated by the Gol de Letra Foundation's team of educators, such as storytelling and reading circles.

In addition to these services, there are events such as meetings with writers, where the team invites authors to chat with Gol de Letra users and students; the reading circle, where various works of literature are read and dramatized; the cine library, which shows films for free; and the traveling library, which holds literature events in daycare centers, schools, hospitals and communities available to receive it.
    • FESTU – University Theater Festival
Considered the most important university theater festival in Brazil, FESTU promotes art and reveals new talents. Since it was created in 2010, the festival has become a meeting point to promote a plurality of ideas and diversity of people.

Over the years, it has received more than 3,300 applications from theater groups across the country and 50,000 young students/artists have been impacted. The presentations were watched by 280 thousand spectators. FESTU also sponsored 17 shows and distributed R$800,000 in prizes and university theater groups were awarded the 33rd Shell Theater Prize in 2023.
    • Cidade Unida
Cidade Unida is a FESTU initiative that contributes to bringing theatrical art closer to underprivileged communities. In 2022, students from Escola Municipal Marechal Esperidião Rosas in the Caju neighborhood, downtown Rio de Janeiro, after 4 months of free classes, presented the adaptation of "A Menina e o Vento", a play by Maria Clara Machado.
    • Breaking Social Brazil (2024 Olympic modality)
Free activities related to Breaking, such as House, Popping and HipHop dances, and sports. The objective is to empower young people with a lack of opportunities, identify and train athletes with Olympic potential, in addition to promoting citizenship, self-esteem and health. More than 150 hours of classes have already been offered and more than 100 Caju residents have benefited in the first six months of the project.

In the social centers, students take free classes on the theory and practice of Olympic sport, which will debut in 2024 in Paris. There they learn about musicality, nutrition, anatomy, Olympic rules, English, marketing, breaking, hip hop dance, acrobatics, yoga, capoeira, crossfit, bodybuilding and functional training.

In 2024, the festival also intends to begin the process of attracting new technology fans within public schools through augmented reality actions or other activation.
    • MAM – Research Professor
Because we believe that education is the path to human development, we support this program aimed at teachers of any discipline working in schools in the municipal education network in Rio de Janeiro who are interested in art, culture and education. They are selected for a training residency lasting 6 months, which through collective and individual remote meetings will develop projects and methodologies that focus on the intersections between art, education and digital culture. Each resident will receive a stipend.
    • Festival Brasil: Avenida of Possibilities (created by the Observatório de Favelas)
We encourage the development of initiatives that promote the empowerment of citizens over the city in which they live. Avenida Brasil, the expressway that connects the port to the rest of the country, is bordered by favelas that have historically been ignored. The protagonism of these people will be present through artists and collectives from different regions of the city and who experience these outskirts on the banks of Avenida Brasil for a collective exhibition at Galpão Bela Maré, in addition to a series of interventions along the route. It also includes a class-tour aboard a bus on a route rich in historical, architectural, artistic, geographic, political and social narratives, which have made Brazil the longest expressway in the country.
    • Desafio Nas Escolas
Educational series that aims to promote self-esteem for public schools and a feeling of protagonism for their students, encouraging passion for school, identifying vocations and promoting a spirit of leadership and community. At C.E. Jornalista Mauricio Azedo, in Caju, the team identified and transformed an idle space into a room for developing artistic skills. The episodes are presented by Fábio Porchat and shown on Canal Futura and Globoplay.
