Many people do not know, but Guanabara Bay has a population of 70 resident gray porpoises. These animals are born and spend their entire lives in the waters of the bay. There they raise their young, feed and develop their social activities. The species lives about 30 years and can reach about 1.8m in length. Females give birth to one puppy at a time every 3 years.
The porpoise population is in danger and the MAQUA-UERJ, since 1992, has been working to that they do not disappear from our waters. Researchers follow all individuals through brand recognition, which works like fingerprints. This allows us to know how each one uses the bay and how we can minimize the threats to its conservation.
In this month of April 2016, the dolphins of Guanabara Bay gained new help in their struggle for survival.
Multiterminais entered into a partnership with MAQUA-UERJ to sponsor part of the research activities.
We thank MAQUA-UERJ for this opportunity and wish the dolphins a long life!
